The average grade for public spiritedness of the citizens of Republic of Macedonia (abiding by the legal duties towards the society), according to the indicators of the Overview of the world values in Republic of Macedonia is 2.61. This shows that the Macedonian society is characterized with low level of public spirit. With the research undertaken by MCIC, on trust and charity in Macedonia from 2006, as well as with the research undertaken in 2007, it is confirmed that the citizens feel that the state is the most responsible actor in the solution to the societal needs. The citizens almost show not expectations regarding the social responsibility of the enterprises. According to the same research, many citizens give gifts, however, irregularly and in small amounts.

The overall goal of the project is contribution to the financial sustainability of MCIC, through public awareness raising on specific problem and its solution or alleviation.
The objective of the project is to examine the conditions with the societal responsibility of the citizens of Republic of Macedonia.

The target group of the project are citizens of Republic of Macedonia. Direct beneficiaries are approximately 6000 civil society organizations in Republic of Macedonia and other actors in the civil society.
The target area is Republic of Macedonia.

The project will be implemented in Skopje whereas part of the activities will be conducted in several inhabited areas in the country.

The expected result is updating data on: public spiritedness (observance of the legal duties) of the citizens; civic participation in political non-party activities; voluntary activity of the citizens in the community; participation and activism of the citizens in the civil society organizations; and charity of citizens.

The project is implemented through the following activities:

a) Survey on the societal responsibility of the citizens

The survey will be conducted in January 2009 on a representative sample of 1.600 surveyed people. The questionnaire will be prepared by MCIC, in coordination with the Institute for Sociological, Judicial and Political Research. For the purpose of attainment of the objectives of the research, the questionnaire will encompass the following variables:

• Public spiritedness (observance of legal duties) by the citizens;
• Civic participation in political non-party activities of citizens;
• Voluntary activity of the citizens in the community;
• Participation and activism of citizens in the civil society organizations;
• Charity of the citizens;
• Social and demographic characteristics.

b) Report on the societal responsibility of the citizens.

The report will be prepared on the basis of the findings in the survey, by MCIC. The report will be printed in Macedonian language in 500 copies whereas the electronic version of the report will be made available in Macedonian and English language on 200 compact discs and through the web sites of MCIC and Civic World.

The time period of project implementation is December 18th 2008– March 31st 2009.

MCIC has coordinate and monitor the project implementation.

The project was financed by EED. The total budget amounts was 612.540,5 MKD.
