This is the first edition of the Directory of Organizations of Macedonian Emigrants, published by the Macedonian Centre for International Cooperation (MCIC) and the Emigration Agency of the Republic of Macedonia.

With this edition, MCIC continues and builds up the positive experience gained with the publication of the Directory of the Civil Society Organizations in Macedonia (7 editions), the Directory of the Local Government Units in Macedonia and the Directory of Religious Communities in Macedonia (two editions each).

The purpose of this Directory is to improve the dissemination of information on the organizations of Macedonian emigrants, both among them and in the Macedonian public at large. The Directory is a joint project of MCIC and the Emigration Agency of the Republic of Macedonia, whose database served as the main source of information about the organizations included in this publication.

The Directory provides information on 583 organizations, from 24 countries.

One of the main principles for participation in the Directory was for the organization to bring together citizens originating from the territory of the Republic of Macedonia, regardless of the ethnic or any other belonging. However, many of the members of the organizations in the Diaspora are ethnic Macedonians and members of the other ethnic communities in Macedonia, whose origins are not from the territory of the Republic of Macedonia. This is why, the organizations of the citizens from the Republic of Macedonia, who declare themselves to be dominantly related with territories outside Macedonia’s borders, are not included in this Directory. The exceptions are possible, although all efforts were made for full verification and appropriate classification. The presence of certain organizations in the Directory does not imply any political viewpoints of the publisher.

The Directory contains the main information of the organizations – name and contact details (address, telephone, fax, e-mail, web site and contact person). The organizations are classified according to the alphabetical order of the country in which they are active. As stated before, the main data were provided by the Emigration Agency of the Republic of Macedonia, and the list was extended with other sources of information (e.g. web sites), which were checked through phone or e-mail. The legal status (registration) of the organizations was not verified.

The Directory provides information on different types of organizations: cultural, artistic and sport associations, friendship associations between the country in which the organization is registered and Macedonia, faith based organizations (either with connections with a religious community from Macedonia or established by such) as well as media outlets (electronic and printed).

The data provided here is sole responsibility of the organizations. Certain changes are possible from the period of data collection (January – March 2009) until the publication of the Directory and beyond.

The organizations are presented by countries, following the alphabetical order. The names of the organizations are given in Macedonian and English language, while the names of the organizations of the other ethnic communities from Macedonia were also given in their own language, where this information was available.
